Kane and Bryan have a long history together. The duo worked together as part of the Team Hell No tag team, and they were involved in some of the funniest and most entertaining angles in a long time.
Pro Wrestling Illustrated documented the importance of this match:
A third Tombstone piledriver from @KaneWWE to @WWEDanielBryan, now on the announce table. Kane vs Bryan is instantly the big feud in WWE #km- PWI (@OfficialPWI) April 22, 2014
The two men went their separate ways but never had the proper blow off to their friendship. After Kane brutally attacked Bryan on the April 21st episode of Raw, it was clear that the former partners would have the chance to settle their differences at Extreme Rules.
Kane had been working as a corporate stooge for Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and The Authority, and his mission is to take the title away from Bryan. With the champion suffering a storyline spinal injury during the attack, according to .com, there is no doubt that the underdog is less than 100 percent.
Daniel Bryan is best when he is chasing or the under dog.... Kane made that happen- DavidHerro (@DavidHerro) April 22, 2014
Bryan originally won the title with an injury as well, and he took time after walking out of WrestleMania 30 to talk with Craig of .com about how it felt holding such a prestigious honor:
Feels good. I'm actually very tired right now. 'Yes!'-ing with those titles is a lot harder than people would imagine. I just want to thank everyone for their support. I wouldn't be here without them. We had 75,000 people in there. They were amazing. They made this moment happen and they made this moment special. And for that, I can never thank them enough.
Bryan has won despite being the underdog throughout his career, and there's nothing that will stand in his way Sunday in the main event either. The has added an Extreme Rules stipulation to the match, but even those odds 't enough to stop Bryan right now.
While Kane may not be the ideal first title defense for Bryan due to the fact that he has been an afterthought for months, the reversion back to wearing a mask and his ominous presence make him a viable challenger anytime he hits the ring.
After beating Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista in the same night to capture the world title, there is no doubt that Bryan will be victorious over Kane this Sunday, but don't let the predictability of this bout fool you.
