James Franco appears to have denied reports that he attempted to hook up with a 17-year-old girl on Instagram.
The enigmatic movie star, 35, contacted Lucy Clode from Dollar in Scotland on the social networking site after she posed for a selfie with him outside the theatre where he had been performing in New York City.
He struck up a cyber conversation and asked if she lived in the Big Apple, if she was 18, if she had a boyfriend and whether he should get a hotel room to meet up - sparking outrage when their publicly visible chat went viral.
But it was soon pointed out that Franco's new film Palo Alto concerns a sports coach who seduces a 14-year-old girl.
And the star himself took to Twitter, linking to part of the story and writing: "I'M NOT! I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you"
Franco is known for his love of pranks, previously mocking up pap shots of himself in apparently compromising positions and spoofing Kanye West's Bound 2 video.
Lucy Clode's Instagram profile now appears to have been deleted.
