The start of Britain's Davis Cup quarter-final against Italy in Naples has been delayed by heavy rain.

James Ward was due to play Fabio Fognini at 10:30 BST, followed by Andy Murray against Andreas Seppi.

However, poor weather meant that the opening ceremony was cancelled and, although it stopped raining briefly, the covers were soon put back.

The weather forecast suggests play could be interrupted across the first two days of the three-day tie.

Should the wet conditions continue, the tie could be concluded on Monday when more dry weather is forecast to follow a sunny Sunday.

When the action does get under way, world number 13 Fognini will be a strong favourite against Ward, ranked 161st.

British number one Murray has a 5-1 record against Seppi, including a victory in their only previous meeting on clay, but the Scot developed a stomach bug and only completed a 50-minute early-evening training session on Thursday.

The three other Davis Cup quarter-finals are taking place indoors, but the Italian organisers hoped that picking a venue in the south of the country would increase the chances of fine weather.
